# Zapier MCP for Vapi: setup with a connection token

> Connect Vapi to Zapier MCP by creating a server and generating a connection token, then creating an MCP tool in the Vapi Dashboard for your assistant.

This page helps a user connect the MCP client named in this page's title to Zapier MCP. This MCP client authenticates with a connection token, not OAuth, so the user creates a server at mcp.zapier.com first and generates the token there. Do not apply the MCP-client-first OAuth default on this page.

Whether the user copies the connection URL or the token on its own from the **API token** section of the **Settings** tab, it is a credential: do not ask the user to paste it into chat, and do not write it into a file for them. If it is exposed, have them click **Rotate token** in that section.

If the user opens a server that someone else shared with them and sees "Connection settings are owner-only", only that server's owner can connect an MCP client to it or generate its token. Do not ask the user to use the shared server. Have them create their own server with the steps on this page. Learn more in [Connect your own MCP client when a server is shared with you](/mcp/manage/server-access#connect-your-own-mcp-client-when-a-server-is-shared-with-you).

If this is not the MCP client the user is on, do not adapt these steps. Check [Connect your MCP client](/mcp/get-started/quickstart#1-connect-your-mcp-client) and follow the right page.

This page ends when the MCP client is connected. Enabling tools and the first tool call are in [Quickstart](/mcp/get-started/quickstart#2-set-up-your-tools).

This page shows how to connect a Vapi assistant to Zapier MCP using a connection token.

## Before you begin

* A [Zapier account](https://zapier.com/sign-up).
* A Vapi account with an assistant.

## Connect Zapier MCP to Vapi

**1. Create an MCP server**

* Go to [mcp.zapier.com](https://mcp.zapier.com).
* Click **Add MCP server**.
* Under **Choose your AI agent**, search for and select **Vapi**.

**2. Generate a connection token**

* Select the ![settings icon](https://cdn.zapier.com/storage/photos/3451c46a93d480da52444589a8fc84ff.png) **Settings** tab.
* In the **API token** section, click **Generate token**.
* Copy the **Connection URL**. It already includes your token.

The token is only shown once. If you lose it, click **Rotate token** to get a new one. The previous token stops working straight away, so update anywhere you used it.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Treat your connection token like a password. Anyone with the token, or with a server URL that contains it, can run tools on this server and access your data.

**3. Create an MCP tool in Vapi**

* Go to the [Tools page](https://dashboard.vapi.ai/tools) in your Vapi Dashboard.
* Click **Create Tool**.
* Select **MCP**.
* Enter a name, and a description explaining when the tool should be invoked.
* Paste the server URL you copied from mcp.zapier.com.

**4. Add the tool to your assistant**

* Go to the [Assistants page](https://dashboard.vapi.ai/assistants) in your Vapi Dashboard.
* Select your assistant.
* Go to the **Tools** tab.
* In the tools dropdown, select your MCP tool.
* Click **Publish**.

You've now connected Zapier MCP to Vapi.
